The Moment I Realized She Had Learned How to Take Off Her Diaper

We were living in Buffalo.  I was taking care of two elementary aged kids after school and during the summer and loving it.  I began working for the family when Little #1 was six months old.  Their whole family loved her so much and treated her so well, and we loved them.  They became our family away from home.  At the time of The Moment, Little #1 was just over one year old.

One day I went in to get her up from her nap and go to work.  She was already awake…standing up…smiling like the Chesire Cat…covered in poop.

That’s the moment:  The Moment I Realized She Had Learned How to Take Off Her Diaper.

Of course it was not a wet diaper that brought on the realization.  Of course it was not a cute little newborn diaper (you’ve heard those are cute, right?)  No, it was a big, stinky poop.

And wow was she artistically inclined in that Moment.  The poop was smeared all over her and all over her Pack ‘n Play.

If camera phones were invented back then, I didn’t have one.  I wish I had a picture, but instead, I used the old flip phone to quickly call the mother of my little charges and tell her I would not be there to meet the kids off the bus.

Instead, the Moment had come for massive clean-up.

Is it just me, or have you also had that Moment at an inopportune time?

  1. Love that story! If it was a contest, you win! Thank goodness for good friends who stay good friends, even after such excitement! 😉

  2. My dear friend was watching my two year old for me one day. When my friend went in to her nice, clean, orderly husband's den where my little #5 was sleeping she was surprised to see #5 was NOT asleep!! Instead the drapes, the crib, the walls, the picture on the wall and of course darling little #5 were all covered in poop….yes, that was the dreaded day I realized she had learned how to take her diaper off!!
